WILDFLOWERS OF ALBERTA
THE ESKER FOUNDATION
"Wildflowers of Alberta," is a body of work that features the various wildflowers found in Alberta, organized by plant families. With 69 flower families to choose from, I will be abstracting each family onto curtains using ink and dye. While this collection intends to highlight the natural beauty of Alberta's flora, it is also motivated by a broader feminist perspective.
Historically painting has been a 'male' craft, with women traditionally confined to the domestic sphere. To challenge this construct and subvert gender roles, I have chosen to create my artwork on curtains an object typically associated with domesticity. By painting on curtains, I am reclaiming this space and creating a platform to assert my artistic presence in a historically gendered arena.
